Do You Know Where The Key Is?
Imagine starting a business where you are the only person with the information on how to access your computer for the financial, operational and customer data needed to make money. As you grow, employees are added and one day you turn the maintenance of your now expanded system including customized data base application to a more technically oriented person on your staff.
Your business continues to grow. In fact the growth rate is not faster than you had anticipated. Then one day the contract programmer who developed your data base leaves and you in-house technical person stops showing up for work. What happens the first day your systems go down?
Your Business Is Stopped Because You No Longer Have Current Passwords and You Have No Documentation To Help A New Programmer Fix The Problem
Do you think this is fictional? It is not. In fact, the actual situation was worse than described. The message is: make sure you have updated passwords for your business and make sure there are at least two people who have that information. Finally, make sure your backup and recovery process works including documentation any trained programmer and network technician can follow.
Until the next time,
All the best,
